Katerina Polemi – ‘Spread the music AND the name’

This young woman is ‘big’!

In a previous episode of One Voice From Africa with Katerina, I mentioned that in size she is a ‘small woman’ and yet, when she walks into a venue, ‘she is not big – she is enormous’. I stick to that.

Last night at CafĂ© Vivaldi in the West Village of New York City, Polemi performed. I had arrived an hour earlier to enjoy a light meal and be ready for Katerina’s 8:30PM performance. The room, while cozy with the fireplace ablaze, was sparse. There were ten patrons at best!

Minutes before Polemi’s ‘session’, as if by invitation, the room filled with enthusiastic patrons eagerly awaiting her arrival. When she did, her enormous effervescent presence filled the remaining space.

Ever the masterful performer knowing exactly how she wanted her performance to play out, Polemi handed out last minute notes and instructions to her band, and then, it was show time!

Katerina is charming, warm, endearing, and BIG in spirit. She opened with “Hat’s relate to the wind,” followed immediately by “If you don’t, I don’t mind,” both her own compositions from the album “Spread the music – not the name.”

I heard her perform “Mona Lisa” for the first time. Delivered with such power, a magnificent arrangement, and yet, with her Brazilian undertones … BIG and yet so sweet and gentle with brilliant accompaniment. The crown went wild! Then another – ‘Sing’ performed in a soothing ‘jazzy’ way which she ended with “Just sing, sing your song.”

Her parents were in the audience and yesterday being her mother’s birthday, we all joined in singing Happy Birthday and the show continued.

The applause was deafening and the audience, delighted!

Polemi wants her audience to “Spread the music – not the name” but this diehard fan requests that you “Spread the music AND the name” for this remarkable young woman is indeed destined for greatness! It is my unbiased opinion that soon, Polemi will be playing to sold out venues in New York City and beyond so SPREAD THE MUSIC AND THE NAME and keep watching the media for upcoming performances of which there will be many in the very near future.

Katerina’s music is available at Amazon.com, the Apple iTunes store and her official website www.katerinapolemi.com. Get It!

Nobel Peace Laureate, Betty Williams on One Voice From Africa

Today, Wednesday September 21, 2001 is celebrated worldwide as INTERNATIONAL PEACE DAY and to honor the celebration, One Voice From Africa will air a 'special episode' at 12:00PM (EST) from New York City.

Joining presenter Kenneth Hieber today is Nobel Peace Laureate, Betty Williams from Ireland. Mrs. Williams is the President and Founder of with World Centers of Compassion for Children International.

“The Nobel Peace Prize is not awarded for what one has done, but hopefully what one will do!” are the words of Betty Williams who in 1976 along with Mairead Maguire was awarded the Prize for her work to bring peace in her native Northern Ireland.

In the thirty-five years since the award, Mrs. Williams has devoted her life to creating a new way forward, a movement to begin a reversal of thinking on how we deal with the injustices, cruelty, and horror perpetrated on the world’s children.

“I had no concept of the depth of the children’s suffering until witnessing their pain. Yet in a world that we know can feed itself, upwards of 40,000 children die every day from conditions of malnutrition. Surely we must question why we are allowing this carnage to continue,” Mrs. Williams says.

Because of many years of work In Italy, World Centers of Compassion for Children International is building the first City of Compassion for children in south Italy in the Region Basilicata.

Greek tenor Mario Frangoulis lends his voice to the episode and performs IMAGINE, a John Lennon composition.

TripAdvisor under investigation after complaints

Britain's advertising watchdog has launched a formal investigation into travel review website TripAdvisor after complaints that some of its reviews are made up or defamatory.

The Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) has decided to investigate after more than 2,000 hotel and restaurant owners approached a company called KwikChex.com, claiming that some reviews, purportedly written by travellers, were either fake or defamatory.

KwikChex.com, which helps companies manage their online reputations, approached the advertising watchdog. An ASA spokesman confirmed that an investigation is underway.

KwikChex.com co-founder Chris Emmins said that he is also mounting a civil action in the United States on behalf of hotel and restaurant owners, and has submitted a formal complaint to the Federal Trade Commission, the US equivalent of the ASA.

A TripAdvisor spokesperson said the company does not comment on "current or potential regulatory investigations or litigation". The Daily Telegraph

Electricity Rationing in Tanzania

According to reports from the BBC the Tanzanian authorities are imposing severe electricity rationing, to save the remaining water in its hydro-electric dams, which are at critically low levels because of the drought that is currently gripping East Africa. But the Tanzania Electricity Supply Company promises that essential facilities such as hospitals will not be affected. Tanzania relies for more than half its power on its giant hydroelectric dams. A spokesperson for Tanesco, Badra Masoud, said "There is going to be rationing, but not for 24 hours. Some people won't have electricity between 8:00PM and 6:00AM; others will lose electricity from 6:00PM to 11:00PM." The dams are expected to begin filling again once the rainy season gets under way in September.

How this ‘electricity rationing’ will affect the safari lodges in the National Parks is anyone’s guess at this time.

Katerina Polemi joins Kenneth Hieber on One Voice From Africa on July 21

Katerina Polemi
is a natural talent with music in her soul, a guitar in her hands, and rhythm in her feet. She is a vocalist, songwriter, guitarist, and pianist. But most of all, she is an artist, with an extraordinary love of performance, and creating music that inspires the soul.

Her album, Spread the Music Not the Name is available from Amazon.com and the Apple iTunes Store and you should get your personal copy as soon as possible. You MUST own this masterpiece.

George Perris joins Kenneth Hieber on One Voice From Africa

Join George Perris and Kenneth Hieber in this episode of One Voice From Africa (July 14) as together they talk about music and together, launch a brand new piece of music, never heard before. Join in – this is a great episode of One Voice From Africa.

George Perris was born in Athens in 1983, his father is Greek and mother is French. In addition to launching his music career, he is working on his third CD while studying ancient Greek literature at the University of Athens.

At a very early age, Perris decided he wanted to become a singer, and began studying piano. From the age of 14, he began to seriously pursue performing, and at age 18, the famous Greek composer Mimis Plessas discovered his talent, and invited him to tour all over Greece and Cyprus.

His first solo album "My New Day" (EMI) was released shortly thereafter, featuring compositions by the famous Stefanos Korkolis, and a Greek version of "Caravane", Raphael’s major European hit. In the summer of 2006, Perris joined the international tenor Mario Frangoulis on a tour throughout Greece.

2008 was a big year for Perris. He participated as a featured artist at the Athens Arena International Music Festival sponsored and hosted by Mario Frangoulis, singing duets and appearing with many important international artists such as Lara Fabian,Lucio DallaJustin HaywardMadeleine Peyroux, andFrances Ruffelle. These performances were recorded and released in late 2008 and early 2009 in a series of two CDs entitled, "Mario Frangoulis & Friends 1… What a Wonderful World" and "Mario Frangoulis & Friends 2… It Makes the World Go Round" to great acclaim.

At the same time, his second album, "Perno Anasa" ("I Take A Breath") was released by SonyBMG. This album was especially important and personal as Perris wrote most of the songs, establishing himself not only as a talented singer, but also as a songwriter with great promise.

In the summer of 2009, George participated in three concerts in Cyprus dedicated to the Oscar Award winning Greek composerManos Hadjidakis at the ancient Kourio theatre in Limassol. This was followed by a series of concerts in Istanbul, Bodrum and Izmir as a special guest of Mario Frangoulis.

In the late spring, Perris was invited by The Greek Institute in Boston, U.S.A. to present two solo performances: "George Perris: Greece, A Musical Journey" at the Stuart Street Play- house in Boston; and "George Perris" for an international show at the world-famous Ryles Jazz Club where he sang in English, French, Greek, Spanish and Portuguese, taking his audience by storm.

The transition from 2009–2010 was pivotal for George Perris, and launched him on a new "international stage" a result of his stellar performances and duets with Lara Fabian in the 2008 Athens Arena International Music Festival. Fabian invited him to perform as a guest artist on her European tour; highlights were two performances at the Zenith theatre in Paris to an audience of 10,000, and in Belgium to great acclaim. Attendees includedNana Mouskouri and Charles Aznavour, who lauded the young artist for his powerful debut performance.
